Leading social enterprise Junction will continue to run its increasingly popular Hackham Community Centre playgroups ‘virtually’, providing continuity and certainty for parents, carers and children when it is most needed.
Junction CEO Maria Palumbo said the playgroups, which experienced a 75 per cent-plus growth in attendance over the last 18 months, were crucial to community connections at any time.
“Play is a natural way for children to develop,” Ms Palumbo said. “It give pre-schoolers a chance to express their feelings and practice managing emotions.
“It’s also a proven way for parents and carers to bond with their children with some guided activities and play in a relaxed environment and enabling them to feeling supported while forging positive connections with each other. We know how valued these opportunities are and we are going to do our best to keep things going through these particularly challenging times.”
With this week also being National Playgroup Week, Ms Palumbo said it was timely to step into the online world.
“From this week we’ll be taking families online with a range of ideas covering arts and craft, physical play, symbolic play – reading writing, drawing, music, and sensory play.
“Being a stay-at-home parent, at any time, can be really challenging and an isolating experience even under ‘normal’ conditions, and the need for social distancing measures will compound this.
“Having fun together, harnessing connections and having something to look forward to has never been more important.”
You can join the playgroup via HCC’s Facebook page or phone the centre during business hours on 8186 6944.
Junction supports more than 8,500 South Australians each year through a range of housing and community services.
